New Drug Therapies

New mesothelioma treatments are routinely being tested through medical research studies. The asbestos disease has thus far proven to be incurable, though mesothelioma researchers are hopeful that an effective treatment will soon be developed. Mesothelioma clinical trials enable researchers to assess whether a given treatment may one day be effective for general use in treating mesothelioma. The patients taking part in mesothelioma clinical trials are given hope in knowing they were an integral part of the research in finding a treatment to help themselves and others in the same situation.

New Mesothelioma Treatment Types

New mesothelioma treatment modalities have been researched and development with the intention of succeeding where traditional treatments have failed; thus far, they have been unsuccessful. New mesothelioma treatment options include:

Development of new chemotherapy drugs: Alimta, Onconase, anti-angiogenesis drugs.

Immunotherapy: the treatment of disease through enhancement of the body's immune system.

Gene therapy: the treatment of disease at the genetic level. Gene replacement therapy can replace a defective, cancer-causing gene with a normal one.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT): the use of lasers or light in conjunction with light-activated drugs to target and destroy cancer cells.

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT): the use of highly targeted radiation waves to destroy cancer cells.

Malignant Mesothelioma Facts

There are three types of malignant mesothelioma; pleural, peritoneal and pericardial mesothelioma. The only known cause of malignant mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Although asbestos was regulated under section 112 of the Clean Air Act in the early 1970s, there are 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of malignant mesothelioma reported each year in the United States alone. This can be attributed to the fact that malignant mesothelioma is a latent disease that can take anywhere from 30- to 40-years to fully develop and present symptoms. The average post-diagnostic survival time of a given mesothelioma sufferer is between one and two years. The disease is believed to be responsible for an estimated 200,000 deaths worldwide.
