Malignant mesothelioma has thus far proven to be an incurable asbestos disease. Although there are a number of accepted treatments for mesothelioma, they are capable of providing little more than a brief extension of life. A great deal of mesothelioma research is devoted to the study and development of new treatment modalities designed to succeed where current treatments have not (see clinical trials)
The lack of success in providing mesothelioma sufferers with a curative treatment has resulted in a great deal of attention focused instead on providing patients with mesothelioma palliation. Mesothelioma palliation is the treatment of mesothelioma symptoms rather than the disease itself. Successful mesothelioma palliation therapies can
improve a sufferer’s day-to-day life, allowing them to live out their remaining days in comfort, rather than pain.
The most common type of palliative treatment for malignant mesothelioma sufferers is the drainage of fluid buildups between the layers comprising certain mesothelial membranes; notably the pleural membrane and peritoneal membrane. Pleural mesothelioma (mesothelioma of the pleura) accounts for more than 75% of all mesothelioma cases. The most common presenting symptom of pleural mesothelioma is pleural effusion, a buildup of fluid inside the pleural space. Pleural effusion can cause chronic chest pain and breathing difficulties. The drainage of pleural fluid can provide temporary relief, though pleural effusion is a recurrent symptom. It is often recommended that the pleura be removed or fused closed so as to prevent future fluid buildups from eliciting painful results.
Mesothelioma sufferers should consult with specialists about the latest treatment options, especially those related to mesothelioma palliation. You may have to live with the disease, but you don’t have to live with the pain. You may also want to ask your doctor for a referral to a pain specialist. Hospice also offers an extensive array of pain treatment options. It can be said that that is one of their areas they focus on.
